Impressions of SOPA and PIPA

Now that you have had the chance to research and read more about PIPA and SOPA I want you to share your ideas here.

Tell us exactly what you knew about PIPA before your research. Tell us how you thought your online life might change based on what you previously thought about PIPA.

Tell us exactly what you knew about SOPA before your research. Tell us how you thought your online life might change based on what you previously thought about SOPA.

After researching and reading about SOPA and PIPA tell us what the facts of the proposed bills are. Be as specific as you can about both SOPA and PIPA.

The night before we researched SOPA & PIPA in class, I was working on homework for another class and happened to notice that Google’s unmistakable logo was blacked out; knowing that pacing the cursor over the logo explained why the logo looked the way it did at any moment in time, I did just as I would have for any Doodle4Google design. But rather than looking for some contestant’s name, I found this statement, “Millions of Americans oppose SOPA and PIPA because these bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S.” After reading the information presented, I decided to sign the petition as well.

Before researching in class, I knew that PIPA, a.k.a. the Protect IP Act, was intended to hinder those who download illegal copies of software, via the web. Regardless of whether the initial perpetrator is a U.S. citizen, the corporation which these acts were committed against has a right to initiate legal action against them. I class I learned that PIPA has more opposition than SOPA, however the general United States population is against these bills.

Before researching SOPA in class, I learned that SOPA, or the Stop Online Piracy Act, introduced by Representative Lamar Smith; intended to build on the PRO-IP Act of 2008, this add-on is intended to work in conjunction with PIPA; however, this bill will prevent the advancement of technology, because as much as we would like to believe, we know not everyone in this world uses genuine software. This bill has an excellent premise, however, it gives officials control over what is defined as “pirated,” and because the internet has no clear “ruler” or set of “defined guidelines,” (the only guidelines are commonly accepted rules of Netiquette) if this legislation were to pass, it would give whoever were defined as the “official leader” too much power. When researching in class, I learned that if this legislation passes, any web site that is deemed “unacceptable” by the official will could be blocked/shut down, even this blog!

Before this project I didn’t know anything about PIPA and SOPA, I never heard about it on the news or in school, so reading about them really shocked me. SOPA allows the government to take down a site if there is a copyright violation. SOPA is directed more towards domestic piracy site. This bill is trying to help protect the intellectual property, like art, movies, or books on the internet. This bill will also allow private companies to make a list of sites that are breaking copyright, and call their pay processors, and any other companies associated with them, to cut off contact. Some say that if this bill passes it will disrupt the regular flow of the internet.
PIPA will allow the government to take legal actions against sites that break copy right. The bill will also allow private companies to sue if they believe that the site isn’t doing a good job of protecting their work. PIPA allows the government to take action by suing search engines, blogs, directories, or any other site to have the “Black Listed sites” removed. PIPA will also force advertisers on the site to be removed. This bill will be able to work on any web site.

Before I research about PIPA and SOPA, I didn’t know much; I thought the two acts were the same thing with different names. I knew sites where blacking out on purpose. I knew a lot of people are protesting against it. I knew it had to do with limiting our Internet. I knew Congress was trying to protect things that were being plagiarized over the Internet. This is about it though.
I thought my online life wouldn’t change with PIPA. After I hear it was to protect plagiarism, I wasn’t too concerned, because I have never plagiarized. I just assumed it didn’t concern me. But with SOPA, I thought my online life would dramatically change. I go on facebook a lot, and I heard SOPA would closed or shutdown parts or all of facebook!

Once I began to research, SOPA and PIPA didn’t seem as bad as it was, but still not that good of a proposal. PIPA and SOPA stand for Protect Intellectual Property Act and Stop Online Piracy Act. The PIPA originated from the Senate, while the SOPA came from the House of Representatives. Both have the same idea: to stop the pirating of music, movies, IP, and other copyrighted material. The bad of all this is that the freedom of an open Internet will be compromised. Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo will have the burden of having responsibility of individuals’ actions that they have no control of. Many people are opposed because they don’t want to support a censored Internet, but if SOPA and PIPA was revised a whole lot, it may not be that bad. But for now, these acts would block off so much of our Internet that SOPA and PIPA wouldn’t help anything. They were created to protect IP and copyrighted material, but how are these things supposed to be distributed in the first place? SOPA and PIPA have to be stopped and many people are by protesting and writing to the Congress.

  4. Before my research, I thought SOPA and PIPA would try to censer the internet. I did not believe it would change my online life as I am not on the internet very often.
After researching, I have found that it will allow copyright owners to obtain court orders that would require payment providers, advertisers, and search engines to stop doing business with a web site that is accused of infringing upon copyright laws in an attempt to keep users from accessing foreign websites that are violating copyright laws. They may also require web sites to remove any copyrighted material Domestic companies fear SOPA and PIPA will force them to constantly police their web site to keep users from uploading copyrighted material, which websites like YouTube believe is impossible. SOPA and PIPA are also criticized for the potential for false notifications that could force legal costs on the accused as well as having to find proof. Some people, however, do not believe SOPA and PIPA can harm a domestic web site.

  5. Before I researched what PIPA was I had no clue. I had no clue there was the word PIPA. When I first heard about it I didn’t think much of it until I researched what it was. I didn’t even know about it until I was in this class.
I heard about SOPA on the TV and through my teachers but never thought anything of it either. I just thought that some websites would be erased from the online world.
As far as SOPA and PIPA research I found that the congress is trying to pass this bill because they think it will eliminate many online issues and bullying. I also learned that not all people are for this bill passing as it could be their job, for example lawyers looking up bullying cases.

  6. Before my researched SOPA and PIPA I thought it would sensor all the websites I go on like facebook and others. With SOPA I thought my internet would drastically change but with PIPA I didnt believe it would change that much. Now I know that both the bills arent as bad as I thought they would be, all they want to stop are plagairism and foreign users selling american goods. With the research I found, I realized that it wouldnt block as many sites as I thought it would. Both have the same idea but overall I am kinda glad that SOPA wasnt passed and It doesnt really matter to me what happens with PIPA. Hopefully new benefitial changed will be made to the internet that will be both pleasing and useful.

  7. Before research I had a good idea that all the "shutting down facebook" hype wasn't true. After I did my research I know for a fact that it wasn't true, and I was unsure of how people could assume that when Facebook was not breaking the copyright law. Also, the goal of the bill was not to censor every last bit of good the social networking sites gave to use. Only to cut down on the overseas piracy.
