New Domain Name Blog Posting

Tomorrow the non-profit responsible for overseeing new top level domain names used on the Internet will open applications to the public for new names. Remember that top level domain names are: .com, .gov, .edu, etc.

Research the Internet to find out:
  • the name of the non-profit
  • how much will companies pay for new domains
  • some of the expected new domains
  • how the application process works
  • why is it so important to certain companies and organizations to have total domain name control - discuss in detail the reasons and why they are important
  • what makes tomorrow such a BIG deal as far as the Internet is concered
In addition, research the non-profit company. When did the company start, what exactly are they responsible for with regards to the Internet, where is the company located, are there other companies like this one.

This will be a lengthy post. Please type your comments in a Word document before you attempt to post it to the blog. This will save you time and frustration in the event that the comment does not post right away.

I expect the research and time it takes to make a quality posting to take at least 40 minutes.

ALL comments MUST be in YOUR OWN WORDS. Do not copy and paste from the Internet and DO NOT copy another students comments.

  3. ICANN, is the organization that is taking applications for new domain names. A company can possibly pay anywhere from $10, to over millions of dollars to buy a new domain name. The average amount to spend though for a domain name can range from a couple hundred dollars, to a couple thousand dollars. But why would companies or anyone if that, pay that much? They want them to be theirs, and have the general public have an easy website to visit, and so they can hits on the website, sell their names, and become more popular. If Google or Facebook wanted to have, .Google or .Facebook; it could possibly be an option. The process of the application of setting a domain name, is just to make sure they can beat anyone else that wants to but the domain name, and make sure that if they get that certain domain name, that they can sell it. So then they can get a secondary name that includes words to the left of the dot. Not everyone will be granted with this option. Who gets to have hot generic names like .money or .tickets will be decided by ICANN. It's important for companies to have complete control over their certain domain name because they don't want other people to have control, or be able to sell that domain as their own and take credit.

  4. ICANN is a nonprofit organization that manages several internet related tasks. ICANN spokes man Brad White believes that that change in the domain names is an opportunity for brands to carve their slice of the market. Because the change in domain names will help the internet market it does not come at small price. To change your domain name you have to pay an $185,000 fee. The buyers of the domain names would pay for names like .shop. With people buying new domain names the risk of over crowing of the domain names such as .com and .org and decrease and also the risk of phishing and spam. The process of adding new domain names would include over seers selling their names and in return gets a secondary name that includes word left of the dot. It is believe that people are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on technical support they would be willing to pay to be in control of their own domains with less of a risk of it being controlled by another person. The addition of domain name sis such a big deal because it will decrease the risk of over crowing and phishing on website and give you complete control over the site that you have created.

  5. Tomorrow, the non-profit organization, ICANN will be offering a sale on premium specialized domain names, ones that draw away from the normal .com or .org. These domain names can be anywhere from .vegas to .pepsi. These sale applications will help many companies save money on hosting a domain name which can cost $185,000 to submit and $25,000 per year. Some of the expected new domain names will boost companies’ and brands’ publicity so they can be more easily accessed online with familiar words as domain names such as “.COKE” and “.MICROSOFT.”
Companies wishing to purchase new domains will have to answer 50 question s regarding the content of their website and will have to provide information on their financial standings, including sponsors and advertisements.
Many businesses believe that this will create a better and more memorable web experience for the clients, and it will also set other companies apart from being piled into the “.com” category that almost anyone can acquire.
Tomorrow will change the internet forever because it will greatly expand and perhaps, get more crowded. It is also expected that the means of searching will immensely change as well; searches will be refined because not every web page will end in the infamous “.com.”
The ICANN non-profit began in 1998 as a public-benefit corporation that was aimed at keeping the internet more secure, ICANN is not in control over the internet, nor the spam that we all have come to love, its core role is internet webpage naming processes. ICANN is currently hosted in Marina del Rey, California. Another webpage, although not quite as popular, that does that same as ICANN is a site called “godaddy,” and it still doesn’t offer custom domains yet.

  6. An important company that handles top level domain names such as .com, .gov, and other names is called ICANN. This association is a non-profit organization helping business’ create and access domain names that are top-level domains. Buyers of these domains will generally pay $15 per year and about $300 for registration. Sometimes people will create the domain based on their name which is then about $185,000 for registration. Some of the domain names that are to be expected are .com, .net, and 20 other branded domain names. Applicants will be able to pick virtually any word, whether it is generic or branded, for a top-level domain name. It is important for companies and business’ to have total domain name control because this allows that company to prevent fraud. If the company does not have total domain control they could lose the domain and be subjected to fraud. Because ICANN is opening its doors for domain name registration again, many people will be registering for their domain names, and those who already own a domain name will need to make sure to watch out for any types of fraud. There are many other companies like ICANN that cover domain names such as CSC, which deals with the same types of domain names that ICANN handles. ICANN was first started in 1980, and this company deals with domain name creation and brings the nation together through the internet, as well as supplying the people with secure domains. ICANN is part of the IS association, otherwise known as the Independent Sector. The IS is a leadership network that deals with all non-profit, foundations, and corporate giving programs that advance America in terms of the common good.

Tomorrow, new domain names will be coming into effect. The organization responsible for making these new domains would be ICANN. They are the ones creating the new domain names. These will be called new gTLDs, which stands for new generic top level domains.

The fee to be able to register or use these domain names will be around $185,000 with a 360 page application.

There are about 72 new domain names in the making. Some of the 72 new domain names include; .africa, .bank, .bayern, .bcn, and .berlin.

As I said before, the application process and registration will be long and difficult. The user will have to answer 50 questions on the suffix and what the domain name will be used for. Also, they have to pay the $185,000 I mentioned earlier, but they also have to make a deposit of $5,000 to get their application processed.
So many companies want their own domain names or one of the lesser used domain names for many reasons. For example, a music station may want its own website with the domain name .music, this way it allows people to find that station easier instead of having to look for .org or .com that has millions of websites that have music on them. Also in my view, companies with their own domain names will have more power. They will be found easier, and be able to advertise their non-profit organization such as the American-Red Cross. With the new domain names, companies wont be shut down as easily. On the rare occasion, a website creator may get an e-mail saying a site has to be closed down and all other sites that have used this URL won’t be able to access that page, but this makes it easier to keep the page up and running.

Tomorrow is a huge deal as far as the internet is concerned. Tomorrow will decide how many new websites will be created, how much more the internet will be used, and how easy it will be for non-profit organizations to get advertising out there. Also with these new domains, websites will be more efficient and it will be easier to tell which sites are reliable, which ones pertain to the information that is being looked for, how much more publicity a site can get, and so many more reasons. So overall, tomorrow is one of the biggest days in developing the Internet.

ICANN is a huge developer of the internet. It decides many things for the internet such as assigning numbers and letters for approved websites and domains. They also have the responsibility for Internet Protocol, address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic codes and country codes, Top-Level Domain name system management, and root server system management functions. This non-profit organization is located in Marina del Rey, California. There aren’t many websites that are like ICANN, if any, there are very few other organizations that hold the right to have this much authority and responsibility over the internet. ICANN is very important to the internet.

As you can tell, tomorrow is a huge deal for the Internet. ICANN will help improve the use of the internet and how it is used.

  9. Tomorrow ICANN is releasing new domain names, each domain name cost around 185,000. Some of the expected domains are . biz and .web for business and general websites .air for travel and .health for health sites. In order to apply you need to provide many different types of contact and technical info. You will give this info through a company know as a register. Having total control over a domain name is important because it helps establish an internet presence for that company. Tomorrow is important because something like this hasn’t happened in years.

ICANN, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is the non-profit organization that leads the world in assigning the top level domain names such as .com, .edu, .gov, and .mil to organizations, companies, and firms. This means, that when a new company wants to “go live” under a top level domain, they must first register for a domain name with ICANN.

ICANN, founded in 1998, now based in five locations; some of which are Marina del Ray, California, Washington, D.C., and Brussels, Belgium. This non-profit organization is responsible for overseeing all of the “official” top-level domain names; these are web sites that we visit every day…those that end in .com, etc. On the other hand, those that are not currently classified at a “top-level domain” (such as .info, or those that have multiple extensions, such as .lisd.us) could soon be classified as one. Thanks to the new guidelines, ICANN will soon open up an application for new top-level domain names to the public. This type of advancement for the Internet has not happened since the 1980’s, and because of the new guidelines put forth by ICANN, this new era in technology where anyone will have the ability to create a web site with an extension of their choosing likely will not be going anywhere for quite some time.

But, all of this does come at a price. How much? Currently, to bid on a new URL the cost is $185,000, and then there is an annual fee of $25,000. ICANN has worked diligently preparing a countless amount of forms for anyone wishing to request a new type of top-level domain. These forms currently range from financial aid requests to general applications. In order for a party to file for financial aid, they must meet the standards that are recorded in a handbook that ICANN has derived. In addition, ICANN has an evaluation process that must be followed, as well as a timeline that must be met in order to qualify for financial aid.

Are there alternatives to ICANN? Yes, but many are too small to overtake them in their current state. Alternatives to ICANN are mainly meant to “fill in the potholes” that ICANN leaves behind, and these are few and far between.

ICANN is the nonprofit organization that has been around since the beginning of 2000 located in Los Angeles, is going to open new domain names; it will take about 2 million dollars plus an extra 185,000 to get the computers to remember the new domain, for the new domain name to work after a suffix gets approved the company will have to register by answering about 50 questions for legal reasons then it can start to be programmed to be able to get the computers to remember it which will take a long time. .sport, .cash, .apple, .go, ect… is some of the new domain names that are going to be coming out. When someone has control over a domain such as .sport, that person will make a lot of money in a very short amount of time that is why it is important to have control over many domains. Tomorrow on Thursday, January 12, 2012 ICANN will set its name on many new domain names which is going to make them very rich and it will change the way we search for things.

  13. This is my blog post January/11/12
I have researched the non-profit that oversees the world’s top domain names. I found out that the name of the company is ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). They will pay $2,00,000 dollars for new domains. Some of the new domain names they are making include .biz and .web for businesses, .coop for business cooperatives, .museum for museums, .union for labor organizations, and . air for travel industries. Their new application process works like this: if you want to apply for TLD all applicants must agree to follow the rules in the applicant guide book, the process begins when a company puts in a $5,000 deposit and is given a login to the TLD application. They then fill out the application and send in all information along with the $185,000 application fee. ICANN will then take 30 days to be sure the people have paid their fee and answered all questions.
The main reason for domain names is to give the user an easily memorable names to internet resources. The new gTLD is so important because it represent the next wave of innovation on the internet.

ICANN is releasing a new 300 to 1,000 domain names throughout the course of the year in order to reduce overcrowding in online names ending in .com. These new simple address names could make websites easier to find. Two top contenders for new domain names include .biz and .web. To buy a domain name there is an $185,000 fee. According to gTLD Applicant Guidebook there is a $5,000 deposit required at the time the user requests the application and the remaining $180,000 after the full application. The evaluation process of these domain names could take as short as nine months or as long as twenty months.

  16. ICANN is a non-profit company; this means that they are not doing what they do to bring wealth to themselves. This is the popular internet company that is creating new domains such as “.DISNEY”, “.HOTEL”, “.FACEBOOK”, and a mess of others. Companies will pay a hefty fee for such a unique domain, so Facebook, don’t look to be getting this cheap in any way. Each application will cost the company $185,000. The process of getting your application approved is quite lengthy too. Expect it to take quite the number of days since such large quantities of companies are expected to apply. Most companies believe it is crucial (I’m surprised I know this word) to have utter and complete control of the domain names because it makes the site matchless, or exclusive. Besides that, it having the incredibly amount of money used to apply for the new domain also shows the website’s audience that they have a great deal of power, and wealth. Tomorrow, January 12th, 2012, is such a day of importance to the thousands of people who are running a website and daily users of the internet because it marks an incredible milestone to a new age of domains, which hasn’t happened in several years. The company that is in the spotlight for the complete creation of all of this, ICANN was established on September 30th, 1998. The headquarters currently stands in Marina del Ray, California. ICANN is strongly responsible for the security of the internet worldwide and maintaining its stability. One of the many goals of ICANN is to promote healthy competition through its multi-stakeholder model. Since it could easily be assumed that I don’t at all have the knowledge of what a “multi-stakeholder model” is, I’m going to explain it. In a corporate sense, “stakeholder”, means anyone from a single person or group who may be affected by the corporate company’s proceeding actions. ICANN is the only company of its kind and is the only one that covers the task that it does.

I tried not to use “imperative”, since apparently your student who is in Honor’s English and on the Newspaper staff lacks the intelligence to know what the definition of the word even is.
Sincerely, an incredibly offended student who knows for a fact your assumptions are wide of the mark, these are my own words, along with the last post.

  17. Tomorrow a global battle for top level internet domain names starts. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, approved the creation of new domain names. To register for a generic top level domain name, companies need to be approved by the ICANN board along with paying around 185,000 dollars. There are about 40 new domain names they’ve hoped to register with, like .Disney, .Facebook, .money, and even some celebrity sayings like .ThatsWhatSheSaid and .winning.
To apply for a Top Level Domain, businesses start the application process by first submitting a deposit of 5,000 dollars to receive a login for the TDL Application System. After approval the applicant has to submit to technical testing in order to prove they have the right financial, and business skills for the job. After that ICANN takes 30 days to review all applicants, and to make sure everything they’ve filled out is completed. The next phase is the Initial evaluation period, ICANN will evaluate the applicants on their Technical and Financial capabilities. Overall, the process is long and complicated.
Because of the increased popularity of the Internet, companies have realized that having a domain name that matches their company name can be extremely important to creating an Internet presence to sell more products. It is important to have total domain name control because two companies with similar, or the same domain names would get confusing to users, and companies could lose money over those kind of mix-ups.
Tomorrow is such a big deal because the way we search the internet will probably change forever. With the new domain names the types of searches become more specific and the use of “.com” will be diminished now that websites start to have their own specific domain names.
The non-profit company ICANN was created in 1998. The main purpose of ICANN is to keep the internet stable and secure. ICANN also coordinates unique domain names to make things easier to find online. Without that coordination we wouldn’t have one global internet.

The name of the non-profit organization that oversees new top level domain names used on the Internet is called ICANN, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. They will open applications to the public for new domain names at an upcoming date, tomorrow: January 12th, 2012.
It is estimated that companies was pay about $185,000 for a personalized domain name. At this cost and the fact that companies will be able to apply for their own top-level domain, the price may cause intellectual property and safety problems.
Anyways, the expected new domains are “.sn” (social networking), “.coke”, “.nike”, and “.apple”. But with some 209.8 million domain names, any guess is as good as any other.
The application process is simple. You choose a registrar and provide contact/technical information for the registration. Then you will be required to enter a contract with the registrar, which allows your registration to be accepted and will be maintained.
It is important to certain companies and organizations to have total domain name control so they can control everything on their sites without strings attached. This will bring on competition between companies, so many will be applying. The total control will also bring innovation to organizations.
Tomorrow is such a BIG deal (as far as the Internet is concerned) because companies will be allowed to apply for new top-level domain names as soon as the clock strikes 12 a.m. This means that either the new “gTLDs” will bring on the biggest revolution in Internet history in the last 30 years, or bring the most humiliating moment in ICANN history. It’s a make it or break moment in technology history.

There is so much to the ICANN organization. ICANN was started in 1998. It is a nonprofit group originally started under the US government’s IANA, or Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, but now takes the place of and does more than IANA.
They are responsible for only its organization of the Internet’s naming system. It does have anything to do with the information or content, it can’t stop spam, and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. They coordinate the addresses (consisting of a name or number) that are typed into web browsers to reach a site or person. The addresses have to be different and the only one of its kind for the computer to know where to go and ICANN is the organization that arranges these addresses.
The company is not located in just one place. There are contributors all around the globe devoted to keeping the Internet secure; there is an internationally diverse Board of Directors and a gigantic staff who are working from 3 different continents.
ICANN is a one of a kind type of organization. It has so many intertwined committees and task forces in its structure that it would be pretty hard duplicate.

The name of the non-profit is ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and NumbersICANN charges an annual fee of 25,000 dollars, an application fee of 185,000 dollars, and an annual Registry Back End fee of 10,000-100,000, and a consulting application, legal, launch of 100,000 dollars. And that is not including the amount operational cost. Or the administrative cost, or the cost that haven’t even been determined yet. .shop, .bcn, .africa, .canon, .eng, .movie, etc are a few new domains. The application process begins with the completion of TAS registration. Then completing your profile. Then you create a new application, submit 5,000 dollar deposit, complete and submit the application, and submit the remaining fee of 180,000 dollars. To keep spam out. Tomorrow they will release new domains for the internet.

  20. The name of the company is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. New top level domains will cost $185,000. New TLDs are expected to be the names or trademarks of companies. To apply for a new TLD, applicants must agree to the applicant guidebook. Next ICANN will approve or decline applicants. Then, each applicant must submit to technical testing. If there is a dispute, the companies can settle it or the name will be given to the highest bidder. Domain names are important to companies because they allow them to stand out from competitors. It is a big deal because stakeholders fear there will be “unintended and unforeseen consequences” and the Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight fears the new domain names will cost businesses millions of dollars because they will be forced to register domain names to protect their trademarks.

Process can take 8-18 months. Control over the domain is to keep spam out and to make sure that what is on the site is what they want on the site. Tomorrow marks the beginning of the start of the new application period and they’ll be releasing new domains.

  22. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the company responsible for all domain names in the internet. The .com, .gov, .edu, etc. In 1989 they were the people who assigned all the domain names to the internet, and in November of 2000 the ICANN board of directors agreed to add 7 new domain names. Getting a web address itself can cost around 18500 dollars, but that also covers the application process. ICANN on January 6, 2011 decided to introduce the idea of new domain names. And take ideas. Names such as .unions, .museums, and things like that. The idea was to be launched January 12 2012. The purpose is to gather information from the Applicant Support Program and get feedback. Current status is still under development. This is a very big deal because it affects the entire internet, its changing a lot. It’s making new domains!

The name of the non-profit organization that is searching to change the domain name is ICANN. Companies will have to have a set fee of $185,000 just to make sure they have their place held to change the domain name, on top of a ton of other fees. Some of the expected new domains are going to be changed from dot com to a more simpler and easier way to locate the website which they would change it to find a store to .store or for a coffee shop, .coffee shop, or for air lines, .air, or for health officials or health websites .health. In order to apply for a top level domain they have to follow the rules in their applicant book on how to further proceed with the domain name. You have to read through the financial rules in the book, and go through a self evaluating process. The reasons why I think companies want to have total control over their domain names is because people will not be able to hack into their website account change information or get access to private info. The companies feel as though they should be able to have complete control over their website. I have also read that changing the domain names to something so simple that referrers to the website allows fraud to happen. The reason why having a domain name such as .org, .gov, .com, or .net is because that domain name referrers to not only that website but other companies with that same domain name. People feel more secure and feel as if their info is true and accurate that no one has changed it. The big deal about tomorrow is that companies are not wanting to change their name because of the huge money issue and the economy being so low right now that people can’t afford to waste a huge amount of money on a new domain name that may not even secure their website, info, or even private info. ICANN was founded in the year 1998. ICANN is in charge of running the technical websites and make sure all the websites in the U.S.A. is running properly. They also control the internet content and controlling internet commercials that come up on screens. ICANN has 3 different locations, two of which are in the same state, Marina del Rey, CA, USA, Silicon Valley, CA, USA, and Washington, D.C., USA There are no companies like ICANN at all.

  25. On January 12th 2012 the name of the non profit that is overseeing all other domain names is ICANN. Also know as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It has been known that some companies will pay up to185, 000 dollars for a new domain. This arise many intellectual property epidemics. Some new domain names are “.disney”, “.facebook”, “.coke” and “.nike.” To start the application process companies will have to lay down a 5,000 dollar deposit to receive a login for the TDL application system. After approval the applicant has to submit to technical testing in order to prove they have the right financial and business skills for the job. After that ICANN takes 30 days to review all applicants, and to make sure everything they’ve filled out is completed. The next phase is the final evaluation period, in which ICANN will evaluate the applicants on their technical/financial capabilities. Since the internet is now used by billions of people companies are realizing that having their own personal domain names will make their presence known and hopefully sell more products. It is important to have a personal domain name because others sellers could have the same domain name as you and it would get very confusing with everything. Tomorrow is such a big deal because the way we research the internet could change for better or for worse. Some companies might go bankrupt trying to compete with other companies for domain names. But overall I think everything will work out. ICANN was started in 1998. The main purpose of ICANN is to keep the internet stable and secure. ICANN also coordinates unique domain names to make things easier to find online. Without that coordination we wouldn’t have one global internet.

  26. The name is ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). They will pay $2,00,000 dollars for new domains. Assistive technology is any tool that helps a student with disabilities do things more quickly and easily by allowing the teacher to use tool that addresses their strengths and their weaknesses. Each disability like hearing and vision has a specialized tool that helps the user do things more efficiently and quickly. One of the most surprising things that I learned about assistive technology is the special computers that allow a person with limited mobility use a touch screen computer that uses hand gestures and voice command to do things like type an essay. ICANN will evaluate the applicants on their technical/financial capabilities.
