What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up

We are going to start working on a project that will involve careers and what you want to do with yourself when you leave BHS.

Many of you already have a pretty good idea of what you want to do after high school and college. Many of you have already set a goal to attend a specific college. Some of you have no clue yet.

We are going to be doing some research into specific careers and the education/training reqired for the career. In addition, we will be looking at salaries and compensation for the careers. We will also look at the cost associated with getting the education and training for a career.

There will be an extra credit assignment associated with this project. More details to come later.

In this blog posting you are to discuss the specific career that you want to pursue. If you don't know what you want to do then you are to respond with a career that you are curious about. In other words, everyone MUST respond to this blog posting with a well thoughout response. You are not going to get a 'get out of jail free card' because you say you don't have any idea of what career you want to pursue.

So respond to the following prompts: (DO THIS BEFORE YOU DO ANY RESEARCH) - this is just your first impressions of the career.
What career do you want to pursue (if you don't know or you are not sure then you are to respond with a career that is of most interest to you).
What additional schooling and/or training will you need after high school? Be specific about the type of degree you would need after high school.
What do you expect your annual starting salary to be in this career?
Describe what you think the duties of this career would be on a typical day?
Describe what you think the working conditions of this career would be? (for instance: outside work, weekend work, shift work, working holidays, dealing with the public, dealing with danger, etc)
Do you think there will be any chance for advancement in this career? If so, what?

NO ONE is allowed to not respond because you don't know what you want to do. NO ONE is allowed to choose a professional athlete, actor, singer, etc. That's because you will need something to fall back on.

After high school the career I will be in is medicine. I want to either be a surgeon or a biomedical engineer. I will need to go to college (The University of Michigan) and maybe medical school.
I want to reach my PHD, and my starting fee would probably be pretty low because I will start low in the chain of command. I think that some of my duties would have to be working with machines, working with people, rehabilitation, and doing surgery. I will probably be working inside and dealing with people, but I don’t think that my work will be dangerous. There is plenty of advancement in that career, no one starts off as the chief medical engineer, you have to start at the bottom, probably assisting and cleaning.

  2. When I leave highschool I want to go to the culinary instatute of america. I know I probabley won't get in I mean it's called the harverd of cullinary schools so you know it's not going to be easy, but owning my own resteraunt and being the chef at that resteraunt is my dream. I know being a chef means your not home alot so I know it would be difficult to have a family but I believe its worth it. Now I also have a plan if being a chef doesnt work out. I love to help people so if being a chef doesnt work I want to work in law enforcement. I dont know much about this career yet but I do know that people need better police officers. Im not trying to be rude but these days you can get a pizza faster than the police.

  3. This is my blog post 1/23/12When I grow up I want to be a doctor, I’m not sure which kind yet. I want to be either a medical doctor or a surgeon .in order to achieve this I will need 8 years of college including 4 years of medical school In order to get my doctor’s degree and my medical license. When I start my job as a docter I will make around $175,000-$200,000 a year. Everyday I will deal with multiple patients and help with their medical problems. Im sure the hours I get will be just fine and easy and I’m sure some days I’ll have to take files home and work on them after work . And who knows, maybe one day ill open up my own medical office.

  4. When I get out of high school I would like to pursue a job that includes art. My friend and i already sell shirts with our graffiti on them. We mainly sell them to family and friends, but hope to start a business in the future. The college I was looking at is the art institute. Though many of the stuff they teach isnt amusing to me, the wide variety of subjects opens the door for more job opportunities in the future

  5. Adults have always asked us kids what we want to be and we would say :
    1. Vet tech
    2. Spy
    3. Detective
    4. Nurse
    5. Astronaut
    6. Cop
    7. Firefighter
But now that its real life , time to grow up and give a real answer we are all confused and a lot of us just aren’t sure yet. Like me I’ve always said I wanted to work with animals. But I suck at science so that’s out of my mind now. So I really do not know what I want to be now. I am for sure going to go to college , and get a degree in something I’m just not sure what yet. We still have 3 more years to figure out what were going to do. But it is always good to know ahead of time so we know what track to be on.

  6. After I graduate from highschool I am interested in the industry of investigating the uses of Cannabis. I was interested in a school in San Diego California called Legal Cannabis Institute, seeing as its the highest ranking school researching medical Marijuana in the United States. If moving is not what I'm set for, or if something stops me, I'm glad Marijuana is legal in the state of Michigan, so schooling should also be available. Schooling for this career choice is unknown because of its uncommon and frowned upon nature. The salary for this career oath will be most likely low and unsteady, and the danger would be at a moderate to maximum level, due to its negative look at legality from other parts of the United States. I doubt there will be much advancement in this career, since I am unlikely to be backed, seeing as my parents are not so for what I want to do in life.

  7. I plan on doing something with graphic arts and working with the special effects in movies after I graduate. To reach this goal I'll probably need to get an art degree, I want to look in to going to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. My annual starting salary will probably start low because right out of college I'll be starting out at a low job like an assistant. I don't think I would have to deal with dangers. If I plan on going into movies I might have to work around a deadline, so I would sometimes have long hours.

  8. When it comes to choosing a career for my future, I have no plan set in stone. I can’t seem to find one field that would satisfy all of the topics that I’m interested in without being ridiculous. I’ve looked at being an author because I’ve always been a writer, and I have also looked into playing with a professional symphony orchestra since playing music has always been important to me as well. Last year I came across a career that really sparked my interest, Musical Therapy. Although I’m really interested in it, I don’t know much about it at all. I visited the official website for the American Music Therapy Association and found out that Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. Special training needed for this career includes clinical coursework and extended internships along with training with treating special education kids and health care fundamentals and an approval by the Board for Music Therapists. I know Western and Eastern Michigan have music therapy programs ranging from 2-4 years. The common salary for a Music Therapist ranges anywhere from $46,000 to $53,000 depending on the setting in which they work. Depending on where I was stationed out of (prison, hospital, physician office, community center, school), my day would consist of evaluating patients and determining their goals and the way they respond to music and preparing activities paired with music and regular check-ups to see if it is helping them.

  9. A Pediatrician is a job I have always wanted. I would love to help kids when they come in sick and help them get better; I know I’d love it. My first impression of this job is something I would defiantly want to do. I know the schooling for a pediatrician is 8 years in collage for a bachelor’s degree, and 3 additional years of ‘residency’. The first year of residency is an internship. After that, I would legally be a doctor. The first 4 years would be regular medical training, and the 4 after would be medical school; then the residency. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that pediatricians make around 80 dollars an hour. Annually the average income would be around 161,410. Lowest income at around 84,840.
I know the job of coarse wouldn’t be easy, but that’s work. It’s something I want to do, so I’d enjoy doing it. My duties would be to take care of my patients and help them get better; I want to be the doctor all the kids really like, the nice one. The working conditions I’m sure would be fine, because it’s ‘the doctor’s office’, it would be pretty clean. I don’t know how the shifting schedules and all would work; it would depend on the office, their staff, and the hours. I’m sure ill manage, and I don’t think we’d be open on holidays, if so, I’m sure I’d work one or two. There will always be advancements in medicine and equipment to help people, so I would have to stay up to date on that, and that would just require additional schooling from time to time.
I know this is a job I would enjoy.

  10. When I get out of high school I will go to college and when I get out I will go and work for my dad at my family business. The schooling I will need will probably be in engineering and business and marketing. I expect my salary to be minimum wage and maybe a little higher after a while. I would probably start out as a truck driver and move my way up to working in the shop and fix coolers. I would work on Monday through Friday and part time Saturday. Yes since this is a family business I will eventually work my way up the ladder and hopefully be the owner and manager of Colling Wood water someday.

  11. The career I want to go into is the marines. I would need additional physical training. Most recruiting centers make you take the PT, and most of the time you have to have a high score to what you want. I want be a specialist in the marines and the starting salary is 21,000 for 2 years. The duties of my career choice are very important; the typical day would be to protect the untied states of America and my friends on base. So my duties are very important. The work would be based on were the recruiting base puts me but I would mostly be working outside, my job would be very dangerous. There are always advancements in the marines you start at private and move your way up to the top which should be general.

When I am out of High school or college I would like to be an eye doctor (opthomoligist). I would like to be one because there salary is almost $254,300. This is a lot of money plus any surgery they do earns them a lot more. I would also like to be an eye doctor because of their low stress and low danger environment. You don’t have to deal with anyone who is insane or you don’t have people die in surgery unless they are highly allergic to something. For this job I will need a 4 year degree in medical school, a year of internship, a DO degree, and be a MD. After all that they need to take a series of exams. A typical day would be seeing people for exams or if they are having trouble seeing or if their eyes hurt. There will be advancements in this job because of the rising number of people with eye issues. One of the most recent technologies would be laser eye surgery which re-corrects your vision so you don’t need glasses. The good part of this job would be working days and hours, they work regular hours and not on weekends or holidays for some offices. Very rarely are there any emergencies. This is a highly needed job now and it will be for a very long time

  13. The career I plan on getting if I do not become a professional football player then I plan on become an automobile mechanic. I have been interested in cars about my whole life when ever my dad would go out and work on any car I would ask if I can go out and help. Most of the time he would say yes and I would go out and help with all the stuff. I could help him get bolts out whenever he tired or whatever. My whole family has be help on their cars because I know a lot about them my cousin had me take a part the engine and put it back together if you think of it it’s not that hard. An annual salary rate that a mechanic gets is close to $16,900 to $52,400 a year. The schooling all I would need is to get out of high school with the working condition wouldn’t be too bad because I would be inside. The typical working duties would to be able to know the parts of the car figure out what’s wrong with car. I would not have to work on the holidays and certain days the shop would be closed so them days I would have to work. I think if I would work long enough I would be able to become manger. Well that is my plan if I don’t become a professional football player.

  14. The career/careers that I would like to go into are medical or financial. I will need both schooling in science and math in order to fullfill these lifelong goals. I will expect my salary to be close to minimum wage but increase over time. I would most likely start off as an accountant or a medical assistant and work up to higher proffessions. I will work Monday through Saturday and sometimes have Sunday off.

After completing high school, I hope to pursue a career as an accountant. To pursue this career, I will need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business or accounting. The annual starting salary for this career is approximately $41,000. The duties of someone within this field on a typical workday would consist of: handling internal controls (a.k.a. handle the cash receipt and revenue), prepare financial statements, budget, and perform analysis. The working conditions for this field vary greatly depending on your specific position; however, you must work with the public, with the computer, the general shift (9-5), and weekends/holidays (during tax season). Unless you are able to work from home, you must abide by the set hours of the company; otherwise, you, like many other accountants have the ability to work from home, in the comfort of your own space, while setting your own hours, as long as your job gets done. There is a multitude of opportunities for advancement within this career; you have the opportunity to advance from being “the new guy, to the manager of the firm.

  17. The career I want to pursue is like a mission and counselor type career. Telling people about God and also counseling them and helping them with any issues they have. To do counseling you need a 2 to 4 year college degree. The annual salary for this degree would be 35,000 to 75,000 so a decent income. If you have 5 or more years experience you can charge anywhere from 25 to 100 dollars an hour. The duties on a typical day for this job would be to counsel people through marriage problems, child counseling, premarital, and mental health. I would have to talk to them and help them with their issues. Doing this job would consider me to go out of my home, maybe to my office or to the person’s house. I think there could be advancements in Christian counseling.I think as people gain more knowledge on counseling they will become more familiar with it and that will lead to the advancements

After high school I would like to become an elementary school teacher. I have always like being around younger kids and I loved my elementary school a lot. Also, both my mom and grandma were teachers in elementary schools so it kind of runs in the family.
Be specific about the type of degree you would need after high school. After high school I would have to go to college for at least 4 years to get my Bachelor’s degree and then I think it’s like another 2 years if you want to either go back or just stay and get you Master’s degree which I would like to get eventually to earn a little bit more money.
When I would first get out of college as teacher I would probably earn like 30,000 dollars a year unless the pay goes up in the next 5-10 years and I think after a Master’s degree it would be closer to 60,000 dollars.
On a day to day basis I would have to do lesson plans come up with fun activities, teach more than one subject, eat lunch, go to school early and come home about an hour after school gets over, go to meetings before and after school, and go to in-services.
The working conditions would probably be 5 days a week 35-36 days out of the year. I would get winter, spring, summer break off, I would go to in-services, I will work indoors unless we have an activity outside. I would like to teach in Ohio or Michigan so I could be closer to family and have snow days.

An advancement I could have would to go back to school and become a principal or become an administrator.

During my uncompleted life, I have never known what I wanted to be. I want to be great and memorable, but doing what? One thing I do know is that I enjoy science and math. For that reason I've looked into the medical field, architecture, and teaching, but those things didn' t quite click with me. At this moment in time, I think I will go into forensic science.
The additional schooling/training I would need after high school is a 4-year degree in a specialized area related to forensics (like genetics or biology), classes in law and communication, and laboratory experience.
I expect my annual starting salary in this career to be about $15,000. The most well-payed forensic scientists can get up to $100,000 annually.
The duties of this career on a typical day would be helping law enforcement officers solve crimes. The working conditions of this career would be different daily depending on the crime and case, which is fine with me. The reason for this is that I don't like having to do the same thing everyday but I like having a place to be. A crime scene one day and a day in a lab seems good to me!
Also, I think there would be a chance for advancement in this career only in the way of working for higher 'ranked' people.

The career that I may want to pursue would have to be a CEO of a company. I know that to be a CEO schooling I will need will have to be business/marketing, accounting, and of course all the basics in college such as algebra, and some sciences while learning to lead people and a company. At least a Masters degree would be required if any degree at all. At first my salary would be low since I would be starting at a lower position in the company and maybe make around 20,000 a year but as I move up I could be making 80,000-100,000 depending on the company. I know that I would have to be a good leader and a good follower. I would have to deal with issues in the company and problems that people have. The work environment would most likely be in an office and maybe some traveling. The advancement that would take place before being a CEO would be slowly progressing up in the company and maybe even going to bigger and better things in the future.

It seems like an interesting job to do, it seems fun and I like trying to find stuff out when I have evidence. The working seems long, because you're always on call and have long hours. When you've been there long enough, you can make $80,000+ a year.
